The body of Christ, ie the church, should be united. I mean if Christ is the head of the church and we are all Christ followers why are we not united? It seems pretty straight forward but then again reality is not so straight forward. I like to think about each member of the body of Christ as a puzzle piece. When we become a Christian, when we are baptized with the Holy Spirit and thus are born again we are give a new identity in Christ thus we become a new puzzle piece. But as a new puzzle piece we sometimes have sharp edges or a moldy side or a part that was broken off. Therefore when you try to put this baby new puzzle piece into the body of Christ is does not fit as nicely as you would like it to.
We all have these sides of ourselves and part of maturing in Christ is the refining of those parts so that your puzzle piece will fit better into the body of Christ in the way God originally intended. We have to round out the sharp edge. Clean off all the mold. Glue back together the broken piece. The end result is a puzzle piece that fits more nicely within the body of Christ, just how God intended it to. Then instead of a puzzle that is all fragmented you have a beautiful picture with all the puzzle pieces fitting together just perfectly. This is what a united body of Christ should be look like.
But how do our puzzle pieces get refined? How do we mature into a mature rather than child like puzzle piece? We do this for each other through the guidance of the Holy Spirit through community, discipleship, mentorship, counseling and prayer. But most of all it is done through love.
“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love,we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:14-16
