Is Knowledge Meaningless?

I have been spending much of my time studying diligently in chemistry, physics, and the likes. It’s like dusting cobwebs off old parts of my brain that have been left unused for some time. I cannot complain because overall I like chemistry and physics. Tutoring is rewarding I many ways and puts food on the table. Definitely a bonus! But as I have diligently studied I find myself very much identifying with King Solomon

“I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted. I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.” Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 NIV

Is knowledge meaningless? Knowledge has allowed for so many wonderful things in this world. Advances in medical care, quality of living, and more come from knowledge. Knowledge in itself is a wonderful gift when used to do things that benefit this world. But I would agree with King Solomon, pursuit of knowledge is indeed meaningless.

When we stand before God the creator of the universe we are not going to be given a Bible quiz, physics test or asked to explain quantum mechanics. Jesus is going to ask, “do I know this person.” We should be seeking first Gods kingdom and to know Jesus Christ our savior. If the lord grants you the gift of knowledge in the process then great, by all means use it for Gods kingdom and glory.

What are you pursuing?
