Marks of the True Christian

Coasters Available for Purchase Here!

I currently do a lot of art projects using resin. It is a fun to work with although it is not the cheapest or safest art media. Using the resin I am able to create all kinds of wonderful art. Several of the pieces have a geode “look” to them. Especially many of the coasters. I feel like the Lord has been teaching me many things through working with this resin. Although the resin projects often look like geode they are not natural stone. They would be considered faux or look alike. Anyone with a trained eyes would know the difference. This is true of many things in life. We have many things in this world that mimic the real thing but are fake.

One of my favorite passages of scripture talks about the marks of a true Christian. For just as anyone with a trained eye can tell the difference between a real geode and a resin piece of art work, there is a difference between those who are actively living out the Christian Faith and those who are not. Similarly this passage of scripture can be hard to swallow for it is a hard standard to live by and meet. But it is also a good reminder of what we are trying, attempting to do as Christians and God promises us the strength to do so when we abide in Jesus.

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:9-21 NIV

I have to say after reading this scripture I feel like I need to bow my head in prayer and repent for the times I have not meet this standard. But I am also reminded that it is through this process of repentance that the Holy Spirit works inside me to produce Gods beautiful work. It is through this repentance that my heart and mind are molded and changed so that the inside of me is not fake rather like a real true geode. This is the true Mark of a Christian. It is through repentance and faith in Jesus that we are made into the people God created us to be. It is through this process that the fake stuff inside us is removed and purified. God’s handiwork is incredibly beautiful.
