When I speak something out it is Julia’s words. There is a certain amount of power to my words. Some of that power comes from what people perceive me to have authority over. For instance my medical degrees give me a certain amount of authority to my words. But similarly my words are really just the words of a simple minded human girl that really in and of themselves have no power. Similarly they are just words. The only value they have is the value others decide to give them. But what about God’s words?
God is the ultimate authority over all things. Thus his words are powerful. They are not the result of some simple humans understanding or knowledge. No they are the words of the creator of all things that has complete perfect knowledge of all things. In the gospel of John he starts the book with talking about how God’s word was with God from the beginning and it became flesh through his son Jesus. Thus Jesus himself was the word of God. When Jesus was alive and walking among humanity he proclaimed the very words of God. We now have the Bible as a written record of God’s word. But God’s word did not die with the death and resurrection of Jesus. No they are very much still among us.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:12-13
We as Christians should know God’s words. It should be a priority in our lives. For without knowing and listening to God’s words we are just helpless, simple minded, lost and hungry sheep. Are you prioritizing getting to know God’s words over the words of humans, entertainment and empty things of this world? If you are not prioritizing getting to know God’s word you are missing out.
