I love to read fantasy novels and watch fantasy TV and movies. I always have. There is something about entering a different world. A different time. A place where things follow a different set of rules. A place that is not the here and now I live in every day. I think my imagination gets the better of me. It is also a form of escape. A way of leaving my current world to enter an imaginary world. I like fantasy.
One of the things I have contemplated over the years and especially of late is what is the kingdom of God? When Jesus was on earth and teaching his disciples he often talked about the kingdom of heaven or the kingdom of God. Furthermore he says that he came to establish this kingdom.
I get this image of Jesus starting a new fantasy world. A world made in the image of what earth was supposed to be like before Adam and Eve sinned. But then I look around at the reality around me and see that I am not living in this fantasy. No I am very much living in a broken world. So what is the kingdom of God?
This is my personal view on the matter. Is it correct? You can decide for yourself. Since the beginning of time, since God created this world, since this world was turned into brokenness by Adam and Eve’s sin, God has been working through the generations to restore it back to the way it was originally intended. Jesus coming in the flesh was one step in that process. He gave us the tools and foundation to partake in the process of remaking our world into what it should have been.
If you look at history and the evolution of humanity, we have made progress. Is our world still messed up? Absolutely. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But there has been progress. Slow but progress all the same. So what does this mean for us today? We are God’s workers. We are supposed to be working to make the world a better place. By making the world a better place we are partaking in God’s kingdom. We are building God’s kingdom.
The next question we have to ask ourselves is how do we as individuals do this? How do we make the world a better place? My personal belief is that it starts with prayer. We have to identify who we are in Christ. Identify our gifts, strengths and weaknesses. We need people in our lives that will help show us ways that we can serve God by building his kingdom.
We all have a part to play in God’s kingdom. We all have a way of either contributing or tearing down. Let’s be kingdom builders. Amen
