I decided to spend some time out in the sun today. I went out in my shorts and sleeveless t-shirt. It was a little unplanned so I did not have any hat or sunscreen. Nor did I have any bug spray. After an hour in the sun with no protection I had numerous bug bits and a nice red hot sunburn. If you are fair skinned and you go out into the sun you will get burned. For this is the nature of the sun and a fair skinned human.
“Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:5-12
The Bible has a lot to say about human nature. I think it quite remarkable how accurate it displays human nature when it was written thousands of years before we humans developed psychology or sociology. For the Bible is a depiction of human nature before we humans ever started studying human nature ourselves.
To me this is a testament of how all knowing The creator of the universe truly is. He even gave us a tool the Bible to help us navigate all these crazy things we encounter in this life. He actually has a lot to say about trusting people. There are numerous places in the Bible where it cautions us to NOT trust people. For it is human nature to be self centered and sinful. We abuse each other all the time. Some times we do it even in the name of God or in the name of love. Just like as a fair skinned girl who goes out in the sun with no protection, if I interact with other people and put my trust in them I will get burned. End of story.
Does this mean I should just hide in a closest or live in paranoia because human are untrustworthy? Well no, God wants me to be building relationships, interacting with others, and working to love people. But I need protection because humans are never 100% trustworthy. What is my protection? Well we have spiritual protection through the blood of Jesus Christ and the word of God. But we also have physical protection through emotional and physical boundaries. Systems with checks and balances. The modern legal system, although flawed, is a form of protection. Accountability to others is a form of protection. Protection is a rather lengthy subject for there are different kinds of protection including spiritual. I think I will save the topic of protection for another day.
For God says we are to trust him. Put our faith in him but this does not mean we have to trust humans. For humans are not perfect like God. We must use protection otherwise when we put our trust in a human we will be disappointed, hurt and possibly abused. God does not want this. He wants us to put on our sunscreen and bug spray to prevent from getting burned and eaten alive. But he also does not want us to stop going out into the sun. We should not hide but we should also be prepared. That being said you can be the most prepared person and still suffer horribly for the sake of the kingdom. Ultimately God is sovereign over all things and brings all things to his goodness when we seek first God above our own self protection. Amen
